How We Create 3D Printed City Maps at TerraVue

A step-by-step look at how we transform real geographic data into beautiful 3D printed city maps.

Creating a 3D printed city map is a blend of technology, artistry, and craftsmanship. Here's how we do it at TerraVue Studio:

Step 1: Real Geographic Data

Each map begins with real geographic data—terrain elevation, building heights, street grids, and natural features like rivers and coastlines. We source this data from open geographic databases and satellite imagery.

Step 2: Digital Sculpting

The raw data is imported into 3D modeling software where we sculpt and optimize the terrain and buildings. This process involves:

  • Adjusting elevation scales for visual clarity
  • Simplifying complex features while maintaining key landmarks
  • Optimizing the model for 3D printing (ensuring proper wall thickness, overhangs, etc.)

Step 3: Layer-by-Layer Printing

We use high-precision 3D printers with PLA filament to print each map layer by layer. The printing process can take 8-24 hours depending on size and detail level. We monitor the print throughout to ensure quality.

Step 4: Hand Finishing

After printing, every piece is hand-finished:

  • Sanding for smoothness
  • Removing support material
  • Detail work on buildings and features
  • Quality inspection

Step 5: Premium Mounting

The finished map is carefully mounted on a premium backing board with attention to alignment and spacing. This ensures the map sits perfectly in its frame.

Step 6: Gallery Framing

Finally, the map is framed in a deep, modern gallery frame (black or walnut) designed to last decades. The frame protects the map and gives it a professional, art-gallery appearance.

Step 7: Quality Check & Shipping

Every map undergoes a final quality check before being carefully packaged and shipped from our Vancouver studio. Each piece is ready to hang upon arrival.

The entire process takes 5-7 business days from order to shipping, ensuring you receive a handcrafted piece of art that celebrates the places that matter to you.
